Brunei has confirmed that it has not imported any agricultural or seafood products from Japan’s Fukushima prefecture, as stated by the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT). This assurance comes in response to recent concerns regarding the release of radioactive wastewater from the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean, which commenced on August 24.
The MPRT has emphasized its commitment to closely collaborating with the Brunei Darussalam Food Authority (BDFA) to maintain stringent oversight of the origins of imported food supplies, including those sourced from Japan. This rigorous approach aims to safeguard the quality and safety standards of food products available in the country.
To maintain these standards, all imported farm and seafood products must be accompanied by a health certificate, phytosanitary certificate, or a radioactive material analysis report recognized by the relevant authority in the exporting country. Additionally, these imports are required to adhere to the conditions specified in the import permit issued by the sultanate’s authority.
